Recording

Widget Studios offers a number of studio recording and production services including music, speech, foley, and sound effects. For each of these there is a theory, a technique, and a tool. Here at Widget Studios, you can be sure you will encounter the very best of each.

“To everything, there is a season…” – Not all recordings are meant to be done on a stage, and not all recordings are meant to be done in a studio. Widget Studios sets out to help the performer decide the best setting in which to capture their recording.

Production

Widget Studios’ owner, Dave Young is not only the owner and head engineer, he is also an experienced music producer who enjoys working on all types of projects. From artists’ records to custom video/film soundtrack work to project management, Dave possesses the attention to detail and endurance necessary to keep the creativity and productivity of a project moving forward from start to finish.

Editing

Years ago, editing entailed taking a sharp razor blade, slicing a piece of rust-laden scotch tape in two places, writing identifying information on the tape using a grease pencil, and attaching the two remaining ends together with a piece of narrow hard to maneuver editing tape.

Today the same concepts are present, only in a digital realm, one can place dozens of edits in a much more precise fashion in a fraction of the time it used to take to do one clumsy edit. The concepts and practices adhered to at Widget Studios come directly out of the old days of editing tape and grease pencils, yet a full digital editing system is in place, allowing the most demanding editing projects.

Nothing beats a good set of ears, and in the days of grease pencils, ears were all you had to decipher a good edit from a bad edit and editor’s reliance on them was so much greater than today since there was little recovery from a bad edit. Widget Studios likes to boast “having the best set of ears in town”. Dave Young our head engineer has plenty of years of editing training and experience under his belt, but he also brings a partly hereditary partly trained set of very musical ears to the editing room. It takes one who understands music in a musical way, but also in an acoustical way. Some of the classes Young passed with very little difficulty in school were Ear Training and Acoustics. This is certainly the place you want to take your editing projects to.

Mixing

No matter what kind of a project you are working on, having another set of skilled ears working on your project is a good idea. We also mix our own projects like everyone else, but we are always willing to get in on a mixing project just to keep our skills sharpened. We also like to work with bands or artists who have already begun their own tracking at home. Need a hand getting your project finished? Bring it in to our studio and mix it with our head mixing engineer.

Mastering

Mastering is where all of the individual songs in a project come together to become one in the form of a record album or rather a CD. The individual tracks are placed in a project together and viewed in a linear fashion to edit pauses, fade-ins, and fade-outs. This is also a chance to hear the overall tone of each song to adjust inconsistencies and bring the whole album to a uniform volume level and overall sound.
